Pupil Premium

What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil Premium is additional government funding provided to schools to improve the educational outcomes of disadvantaged pupils. Funding is allocated for pupils who are eligible for free school meals, have been eligible within the last six years, are currently or previously looked after by a local authority, or meet other eligibility criteria set by the Department for Education.

Evidence shows that disadvantaged pupils can face additional barriers to learning. Schools use Pupil Premium funding to provide targeted support, enhance teaching and learning, improve attendance and wellbeing, and ensure that all pupils can achieve their full potential.

Schools are required to publish a Pupil Premium Strategy Statement outlining how funding will be used and evaluating its impact on pupil outcomes.

How do schools use the Pupil Premium Grant?

Each school is allocated funds for every pupil premium child they have on roll in their school. Schools have flexibility to use the grant in ways that best support disadvantaged pupils and improve educational outcomes.

Schools may use the grant to provide high-quality teaching, targeted academic support and wider strategies that help remove barriers to learning and improve pupils' wellbeing, attendance and achievement.

All schools are required to be transparent about how they use Pupil Premium funding and must publish a Pupil Premium Strategy Statement outlining how the funding will be spent and the impact it is having on pupils' outcomes.
