British Values

British Values at Havelock

At Havelock Primary School, we promote the fundamental British Values through our school ethos, curriculum, personal development programme, spiritual, moral, social and cultural education, and our work as a UNICEF Rights Respecting School. We actively challenge any views or behaviours that are contrary to these values.

We promote and reinforce the British Values of:

  • Democracy
  • The Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect
  • Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Rights Respecting School

As a UNICEF Rights Respecting School, children's rights are embedded throughout school life.

United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)

  • Article 12: Every child has the right to be heard.
  • Article 2: Every child has the right to be treated equally and with respect.

Children work collaboratively to create their class charter, identifying the rights they wish to uphold and the responsibilities that accompany them. The role of adults, as duty bearers, is also clearly defined. Rights Respecting language and behaviour are woven throughout school life, including during lessons, lunchtime and playtime.

Our Rights Ministers work alongside school leaders to promote children's rights, raise awareness of important issues and support whole-school initiatives.

Democracy

Children at Havelock are encouraged to have a voice and play an active role in shaping school life. Through our Pupil Ministers, pupils represent the views of their peers, contribute ideas and help improve the school community.

Pupils regularly share their opinions through class discussions, surveys and pupil voice activities. They are encouraged to express their views respectfully and understand that their opinions can make a positive difference.

Children have also contributed to key school developments, including reviewing school policies and helping to shape improvements to the learning and play environment.

Individual Liberty

We support pupils to become confident, independent and responsible individuals. Children are encouraged to make choices, take ownership of their learning and understand the importance of personal responsibility.

To ensure every child feels heard and supported, Worry Boxes are available throughout the school. These provide pupils with a safe and confidential way to share concerns, ask for help and seek support from trusted adults. This helps pupils understand that their voice matters and that support is always available when needed.

Within lessons, children are encouraged to make choices, take risks in their learning and develop resilience as they become independent learners.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance

Havelock is a diverse and inclusive community where everyone is valued and respected. Through our curriculum, assemblies and daily interactions, pupils learn to appreciate different cultures, beliefs and backgrounds.

We encourage children to treat others with kindness, respect and empathy and to celebrate the rich diversity that exists within our school and wider community.

Through our Rights Respecting work and commitment to British Values, we prepare pupils to become respectful, responsible and active citizens who can contribute positively to modern Britain.
